Weather conditions across Kazakhstan’s largest cities will vary sharply over the next few days. While the capital braces for severe frost and snowstorms, southern regions will enjoy relatively mild winter weather. This is what residents of Astana, Almaty and Shymkent can expect between January 12 and 14DKNews.kz reports.

Astana: From Snowstorms to Deep Freeze

Astana is set for a dramatic temperature drop. On January 12, cloudy skies and snowfall are expected, accompanied by blizzards and icy roads. Strong westerly winds may reach 15–20 meters per second, making conditions uncomfortable for travel.

By January 13, light snow and drifting blizzards may continue overnight. Temperatures will fall to -13 to -15°C at night, remaining around -11 to -13°C during the day.

The coldest day will be January 14. With no significant precipitation, nighttime temperatures could plunge to -25 to -27°C, while daytime highs are expected to stay between -20 and -22°C.

Almaty: Mild Temperatures, Morning Fog

Almaty will see a much softer winter pattern. On January 12, dry weather is expected, though fog may form during the night and early morning. Daytime temperatures will rise to +7 to +9°C.

On January 13, mixed precipitation in the form of rain and snow is possible overnight, followed by morning fog. Daytime temperatures will range from +5 to +7°C.

By January 14, conditions will be dry again, with fog likely during the early hours. Daytime temperatures will remain relatively warm at +3 to +5°C.

Shymkent: Near-Spring Warmth

Southern Kazakhstan will enjoy near-spring conditions. On January 12, rain is expected overnight and in the morning, with strong winds reaching 15–20 m/s. Daytime temperatures will climb to +7 to +9°C.

Both January 13 and 14 are forecast to be dry, with daytime temperatures rising further to +10 to +12°C, then +11 to +13°C.

What Residents Should Keep in Mind

Authorities advise residents in northern regions to exercise caution due to icy roads, strong winds and extreme cold. In southern and southeastern cities, fog and gusty winds may reduce visibility and affect traffic conditions.

The sharp contrast in weather highlights how dramatically conditions can differ across Kazakhstan, even within the span of a few days.
