Almaty International Airport is steadily strengthening its position as a key aviation and logistics hub in the region. A clear sign of this trend is the decision by Turkish Airlines to increase the number of cargo flights operating through Almaty, reinforcing Kazakhstan’s growing role in international air transit.
A key step behind this move was the signing of an agreement between KazMunayGas-Aero and Turkish Airlines for “into-wing” aircraft refueling services at Almaty Airport. The agreement covers both passenger and cargo flights operated by the airline, DKNews.kz reports.
Why this decision matters
The achieved agreements became possible due to the systematic reduction in aviation fuel prices in Kazakhstan for international carriers, as well as coordinated efforts by the Government, Almaty Airport, and the specialized fuel operator. Together, these measures have significantly improved operating conditions for foreign airlines.
For carriers, this means lower costs and greater efficiency. For Almaty Airport, it translates into higher transit attractiveness and increased international traffic.
Strengthening Almaty’s role as a cargo hub
The decision by Turkish Airlines to expand cargo operations through Almaty is expected to boost air freight volumes and further enhance the airport’s role as a major international aviation and logistics hub.
Almaty is increasingly viewed not only as a destination, but also as a strategic transit point between Europe and Asia. The growth of cargo routes supports faster deliveries, more resilient supply chains, and stronger interest from global logistics players.
Part of a broader national strategy
These measures are part of a consistent effort to implement the directives of the Head of State aimed at developing Kazakhstan’s transport and logistics potential, increasing the competitiveness of domestic airports, and creating favorable conditions for attracting foreign airlines.
Special emphasis is being placed on the air cargo segment, which remains one of the fastest-growing areas in global logistics.
Ongoing cooperation with global carriers
KazMunayGas-Aero continues systematic work to expand cooperation with leading international airlines and to establish transparent, stable, and competitive conditions for aviation fuel supply at airports across the country.
This approach creates long-term predictability for airlines and strengthens Kazakhstan’s position as a reliable transit partner.
Global context
Turkish Airlines operates regular flights to 131 countries, holding a world record for the widest international route network. Its fleet consists of nearly 500 aircraft, while its cargo division ranks among global leaders, serving more than 340 destinations worldwide.
The expansion of cargo flights through Almaty by such a major global carrier confirms that Kazakhstan’s airports are becoming increasingly integrated into the international air transport system. The development of air transit is no longer a concept, but a practical and measurable process.
