A large-scale agro-industrial project is taking shape in southern Kazakhstan. In the Keles district of the Turkestan region, construction is underway on a major industrial greenhouse complex that will be capable of producing up to 25,000 tons of tomatoes per year. The project is being developed on a 51-hectare site and is expected to play a key role in strengthening the country’s food security, DKNews.kz reports.
The greenhouse complex is widely described as one of the most ambitious agricultural projects in the region, both in terms of investment volume and production capacity.
Major investment and rapid progress
The total investment in the project amounts to 42 billion tenge. Construction is progressing steadily. To date:
- metal structures for greenhouse blocks have been installed on 40 hectares;
- internal and external utility networks have been completed;
- a boiler house and a backup fuel storage facility have been built;
- four out of eight greenhouse blocks are already operational.
At the same time, construction continues on administrative and utility buildings, as well as warehouse facilities needed for the full-scale operation of the complex.
Jobs, technology, and future expansion
According to the project’s founders, the greenhouse will have a strong social and economic impact once fully launched.
After the full commissioning of the project, around 800 new jobs will be created. The complex will be equipped with modern Dutch technology, and the greenhouse area is planned to be expanded step by step to 500 hectares.
This approach signals a long-term vision: the project is not limited to a single facility, but is designed to evolve into a large high-tech greenhouse hub.
Launch timeline
The full launch of the greenhouse complex is scheduled for spring 2027. Once operational, it will help ensure a stable supply of fresh tomatoes to the domestic market, reduce dependence on imports, and mitigate seasonal price fluctuations.
Turkestan region strengthens its agricultural role
The project in Keles fits into a broader trend of rapid greenhouse development in the Turkestan region. In 2025, the total greenhouse area in the region increased by 75 hectares, reaching 1,715 hectares. During the year, local producers harvested:
- more than 150,000 tons of vegetables;
- 550 tons of bananas;
- 3,200 tons of lemons;
- 13,000 tons of strawberries.
These figures underline the region’s growing status as one of Kazakhstan’s leading centers of modern agricultural production.
Why this project matters
The mega greenhouse under construction in southern Kazakhstan is more than just an investment project. It represents:
- large-scale job creation;
- the introduction of advanced agricultural technologies;
- stronger food security;
- long-term potential for export-oriented production.
Against the backdrop of climate challenges and rising demand for locally produced food, projects of this scale are increasingly seen as strategic. The Turkestan region’s new greenhouse complex is poised to become a cornerstone of Kazakhstan’s modern agro-industrial future.
