On March 13 and 14, the Astana Ballet Theatre will once again present the ballet-cantata “Carmina Burana” to audiences in the capital, DKNews.kz reports.
Its summer premiere created a strong resonance among ballet admirers, as for the first time an orchestra, choir and ballet company performed together in a unified stage space.
The return of the production promises the same масштаб и эмоциональное напряжение that captivated viewers during its debut.
A powerful musical foundation
The ballet is based on the iconic composition by Carl Orff, one of the most prominent German composers of the 20th century.
“Carmina Burana” is widely regarded as one of the most significant musical works of its era, standing at the intersection of academic tradition and popular culture.
The score’s dynamic rhythm and dramatic force give the production its philosophical depth and emotional intensity.

Reflection on fate, love and human nature
The performance explores themes of human nature, spiritual struggle and the eternal cycle of life.
On stage, opposing forces collide:
- the material and the spiritual
- creation and destruction
- temptation and purity
- fate and free will
At the heart of the story are two central characters — a young man and a young woman — drawn together by love. Their journey becomes a test of inner strength as they strive to overcome temptation and preserve the purity of their feelings.
The visual concept draws inspiration from Renaissance aesthetics, while symbolic figures personify the forces traditionally associated with the Creator and the Destroyer.
Choreography and artistic vision
The production was created by choreographers Mukaram Abubakhrieva (Avakhri) and Timur Zagidullin, who conveyed the dramaturgy through expressive and dynamic choreographic language.
The choreography blends:
- neoclassical technique
- contemporary dance vocabulary
- elements of movement improvisation
This fusion enhances the emotional narrative and gives the ballet a modern visual dimension.

Live music and vocal performance
A defining feature of the production is its live musical execution. The orchestra, choir and soloists perform under the baton of Chief Conductor Arman Urazgaliyev.
The choir, directed by Gulmira Kuttybadamova, adds monumental sound and scale to the performance.
Opera soloists also take part in the two-act production:
- baritone Adil Sultan
- tenor Talgat Allabirinov
- soprano Firuza Rakhmetova
Their vocal parts amplify the dramatic tension and emotional impact of the work.
A multi-genre theatrical experience
“Carmina Burana” combines music, choreography, vocal performance and lighting dramaturgy into a single large-scale artistic statement.
The production offers audiences a philosophical exploration of the cycle of life and the triumph of love, reminding viewers of the eternal movement of the wheel of Fortune and the renewal of the human soul.
