A festive Gala Ballet dedicated to International Women’s Day took place on March 6 and 7 at the Astana Ballet Theatre, DKNews.kz reports.
The audience was presented with a vibrant and diverse program that combined masterpieces of classical ballet with contemporary choreographic works. The evening unfolded with the accompaniment of the theatre’s symphony orchestra conducted by chief conductor Arman Urazgaliyev.
The performance became a celebration of dance, music and artistic expression, creating a special festive atmosphere on the eve of spring.
Classical heritage and contemporary choreography
The first part of the program featured choreographic miniatures along with the ballet “Triumph,” set to music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and choreographed by Ainur Abilgazina.
According to the choreographer, the production reflects admiration for the language of classical dance and celebrates the traditions of academic ballet.
“Triumph,” set to Tchaikovsky’s music, became Ainur Abilgazina’s first major choreographic work.
Iconic ballet masterpieces on stage
The gala program also featured a series of virtuoso solo and duet performances accompanied by elaborate costumes and expressive stage design.
Fragments from famous classical and neoclassical ballets were presented to the audience, including:
- “Spartacus” by Aram Khachaturian
- “Spring Waters” by Sergei Rachmaninoff
- “Giselle” by Adolphe Adam
- “The Swan” by Camille Saint-Saëns
- Pas de deux from “Don Quixote” by Ludwig Minkus
These excerpts showcased the technical mastery and artistic versatility of the theatre’s dancers.

Theatre dedicates evening to women
The gala concert was designed to celebrate women and mark the arrival of spring with a festive artistic event.
“The Gala Ballet is a special evening event held in celebration of International Women’s Day. On the eve of spring, the theatre is dedicating this evening to women, striving to create an atmosphere of warmth and inspiration for the audience and to foster a special festive mood. To celebrate the arrival of spring, we held a vibrant gala concert featuring a variety of choreographic pieces, ranging from exquisite classics to expressive modern works. This palette enabled us to highlight the troupe’s artistic versatility and demonstrate their professional maturity. The program also featured fragments and miniatures from recognized world masterpieces of ballet, which added a special solemnity to the evening and emphasized the continuity of tradition and modernity,” said the theatre’s artistic director Nurlan Kanetov.
Cultural celebration supported by the ministry
The festive event was organized with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The gala performance once again highlighted the Astana Ballet Theatre’s role as one of the country’s leading cultural institutions, bringing together classical heritage and modern artistic expression on one stage.
