On 27–28 March, the Astana Ballet Theatre will host the premiere of the modern ballet “Bolero X” — a bold choreographic reinterpretation of Maurice Ravel’s legendary score by renowned Israeli choreographer Shahar Binyamini, DKNews.kz reports.
The production promises not just a visual accompaniment to familiar music, but a deep rethinking of its structure, rhythm, and emotional force.
Not an illustration, but a transformation
“Bolero X” moves beyond traditional storytelling. Instead of illustrating Ravel’s composition, the performance transforms it into a living stage ritual.
Built on the hypnotic rhythm and gradual crescendo of the original score, the choreography turns repetition into meaning — not mechanical, but emotional and philosophical.
Movement, energy, and collective presence become the main language of the performance.
A collective body on stage
At the heart of the production is a large ensemble of around 50 dancers. Rather than focusing on a soloist, Binyamini treats the group as a single organism.
The choreography explores:
- unity and shared identity
- the tension between individuality and collectivity
- constant transformation within group dynamics
- the physical embodiment of musical rhythm
Through waves of motion and shifting formations, the stage becomes a space of “shared breathing,” where dancers move as one evolving body.
From restraint to intensity
The structure of the choreography mirrors the musical arc of “Boléro.”
It begins with restraint and minimalism, gradually building toward a powerful climax where movement density and emotional intensity peak.
This progression creates a sense of immersion, drawing the audience into a growing physical and visual напряжение that culminates in a striking finale.
The meaning behind “X”
The “X” in the title carries symbolic weight.
It represents a point of intersection — where:
- past meets present
- individual meets collective
- music meets movement
In this sense, “Bolero X” becomes a dialogue between classical heritage and contemporary artistic thinking.

International recognition and global stage
The production has already gained wide international acclaim, becoming a notable work on the global contemporary dance scene.
“Bolero X” has been presented across:
- Europe
- North America
- Asia
It has been staged by leading companies such as Ballet BC and developed in collaboration with institutions like Tanz Akademie Zurich. The work has often appeared in mixed programs alongside major ballet and contemporary dance productions.
Voices from the creative team

Assistant choreographer Joseph Kudra shared his impressions of working with the Astana Ballet dancers:
“The artists of the Astana Ballet are simply incredible. Their technique, flexibility and physical capabilities are astonishing. Their bodies seem to have an innate understanding of ballet, making for a truly captivating performance. They have so much potential and so many opportunities, perhaps some of which they have not even thought about. I count myself very fortunate to be working alongside such talented and capable artists. My goal is to open new doors and introduce new ideas and ways of moving for them. It is not only about the physics of the body and pushing the boundaries of what is possible, but also about revealing their consciousness: how they approach movement from a deeper inner state, and not just as a set of steps.”
A major cultural moment for Astana
Shahar Binyamini is widely regarded as one of the leading voices in contemporary choreography, known for combining physical intensity with emotional and visual depth.
“Bolero X” is considered one of his signature works — a piece that has helped define his international reputation.
The Astana premiere will be accompanied by the theatre’s Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Chief Conductor Arman Urazgaliyev.
The event is expected to become a highlight of the capital’s cultural calendar, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience one of the most striking contemporary ballet works on the global stage.
The production is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Why this matters
The arrival of “Bolero X” in Astana reflects a broader shift in Kazakhstan’s cultural landscape:
- growing integration into the global arts scene
- openness to experimental and contemporary formats
- development of local dancers through international collaboration
- strengthening the capital’s status as a cultural hub
For audiences, it is not just a performance — but an encounter with a new language of movement.
