The Astana Ballet Theater has successfully concluded its annual tour in Almaty.
From May 2 to May 7, the capital’s team presented vivid productions at the Almaty Theatre, thereby arousing great public interest, DKNews.kz reports.

All performances were given full houses, thus confirming the high level of interest in modern Kazakh ballet art among the audience.
“It is imperative for the theatre to not only sustain a high level of performance, but also to perpetually expand its artistic horizons. This year, we presented new productions to the audience in Almaty, reflecting our creative exploration and our desire to communicate with them using a modern theatrical language. We are delighted that the tour has generated such a vibrant response from the audience,” said theatre director Tair Karatayev.

The tour began with a performance of the two-act ballet “Two Carpets”, which premiered last autumn. Based on the ancient Azerbaijani legend of the Shirvan carpet, the large-scale production immersed the audience in a world of symbols, human destinies and profound emotions. Thanks to the expressive visual language of the production, the love story, which has endured the trials of time, war and separation, received a warm response from the audience. Valery Kopeikin is the author of the libretto and the ideological inspirer of the project, and Alexander Mogilev is the director and choreographer.

The tour reached its grand finale with the cantata ballet “Carmina Burana”, performed on May 6 and 7. The production, which won the “Best Production of 2025” award, brought together ballet, choir, orchestra and soloists on stage to create a large-scale synthesis of action. The performance, which explored the timeless themes of love, temptation, spiritual choice, and the conflict between opposing forces, prompted an extended ovation from the audience.

The choreographers are Mukaram Abubakhrieva, who is the theatre’s chief choreographer and the Honoured Figure of Kazakhstan, and Timur Zagidullin. The musical accompaniment was performed by an orchestra, choir and soloists, under the direction of Chief Conductor Arman Urazgaliyev. The performance also featured opera soloists, namely baritone Adil Sultan, tenor Talgat Allabirinov, and soprano Firuza Rakhmetova, who participated in the production. The production’s unique scale was enhanced by the participation of the Abai Kazakh National Opera and Ballet Theatre Choir, conducted by the Chief Choirmaster and Honoured Figure of Kazakhstan, Aliya Temirbekova.

“The tour in Almaty is always a special event for our theatre. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the audience for their incredibly warm welcome, full houses and sincere emotions. It is especially important to us that the new productions have received such a positive response from the audience in Almaty,” said Nurlan Kanetov, the theatre’s artistic director.
The Astana Ballet tour was made possible with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan and was widely regarded as one of the most notable cultural events of the spring season.
