As the curtain falls on another theatre season, Astana Ballet is taking its final bow not in the capital, but on the stages of western Kazakhstan.
This July, audiences in Atyrau and Aktau will witness a vibrant celebration of dance, symphonic music and opera, as one of the country's leading cultural institutions embarks on a major regional tour, DKNews.kz reports.
The tour promises more than a series of performances. It is a journey through Kazakhstan’s artistic heritage and the timeless masterpieces of world classical music — all brought together in a program designed to inspire, unite and leave a lasting impression.
A Celebration of the Great Steppe in Atyrau
On July 5 and 6, Astana Ballet will present its acclaimed concert program, The Heritage of the Great Steppe, at the Makhambet Utemisov Drama Theatre in Atyrau.
Over the years, the production has become one of the theatre’s signature works, successfully representing Kazakhstan on international stages and festivals. Combining traditional folk dance motifs, ethnographic elements and contemporary choreography, the performance offers audiences a vivid portrait of the nation’s cultural identity.
The production captures the spirit, history and artistic richness of the Kazakh steppe through expressive movement, powerful imagery and innovative staging.
“We are delighted to have the opportunity to showcase our work to the audience of western Kazakhstan. The concert program entitled ‘The Heritage of the Great Steppe’ occupies a special place in the theatre’s repertoire, reflecting the richness of national culture, the beauty of traditions and the spirit of the Kazakh steppe. I am confident that this production will receive a genuine response from the audience in Atyrau. In Aktau, we will present a program featuring the symphony orchestra and opera soloists. The program will combine recognised masterpieces of world classics with works by Kazakhstani composers. These tours provide an opportunity to demonstrate the theatre’s versatility, ranging from vibrant national choreographic pictures to the high art of symphonic and opera music. I hope that our collective’s performances will leave a vivid impression on the audience and celebrate art in a real way,” said Nurlan Kanetov, Artistic Director of Astana Ballet.
Music for Everyone
The tour will continue on July 8 with a special symphonic concert in Zhanaozen, organized with the support of the Mangystau Region Department of Culture, Language Development and Archival Affairs, as well as the Zhanaozen city administration.
The event is intended for residents of the city, including members of socially vulnerable groups and people with disabilities, highlighting the theatre’s commitment to making high culture accessible to wider audiences.
World Classics Meet Kazakh Masterpieces in Aktau
The musical part of the tour reaches its peak on July 10 and 11, when the Astana Ballet Symphony Orchestra takes the stage at the Abai Cultural and Leisure Centre in Aktau.
Under the baton of chief conductor Arman Urazgaliyev, audiences will hear an ambitious program that bridges cultures, eras and musical traditions. The repertoire will feature celebrated works from both Kazakh and European classical music, demonstrating the universal language of great art.
“The program that we will present in Aktau brings together pieces that have become true gems of the world of music. For the orchestra, it is particularly valuable to have the opportunity to introduce the audience to music that has retained its emotional power and depth for centuries. I am sure that the upcoming concerts will make a vivid impression on the audience and allow them to experience familiar masterpieces in a new way,” said Arman Urazgaliyev, Chief Conductor of the Astana Ballet Symphony Orchestra.
Adding to the atmosphere will be some of Kazakhstan’s leading opera voices. International competition laureates Adil Sultan, Firuza Rakhmetova and Talgat Allabirinov will perform renowned arias and vocal works that have become part of the golden treasury of world musical culture.
Together with the symphony orchestra, they will present a rich and emotionally charged program that showcases the highest standards of musical performance.
A Cultural Summer Highlight
As Astana Ballet closes its season, the company is bringing some of its most celebrated productions far beyond the capital, giving audiences in western Kazakhstan a rare opportunity to experience world-class choreography, orchestral music and opera close to home.
For residents and visitors of Atyrau, Zhanaozen and Aktau, these performances are set to become one of the region’s most significant cultural events of the summer — a meeting of tradition and modernity, national heritage and global classics, all on one stage.
