The Astana Ballet Theatre has concluded its XIII theatrical season with the premiere of the national ballet Altyn Gul, a production inspired by Kazakhstan’s history, culture, and natural heritage, DKNews.kz reports.
The performances on June 26 and 27 were completely sold out, drawing ballet enthusiasts, cultural figures, and guests from across the country. The premiere became one of the highlights of the theatre’s season and was warmly received by audiences.
Ancient Artifact Inspires a Modern Ballet
The story of Altyn Gul is based on a remarkable archaeological discovery — a gold plate dating from the 3rd–2nd centuries BC depicting a tulip, found in the ancient Tenlik burial mounds.
Inspired by this historical artifact, the creators developed a philosophical story about Zerger, a master jeweler who is captivated by the beauty of the steppe tulip and immortalizes it through his art.
The production blends:
- Classical ballet
- Neoclassical choreography
- Contemporary dance
Together, these styles tell a story of inspiration, spiritual discovery, artistic creativity, and the continuity of generations.
Throughout the performance, the steppe tulip serves as a symbol of beauty, renewal, vitality, and a deep connection with the homeland.

Audience Welcomes the New Production
The premiere received an enthusiastic response from theatergoers, who praised its choreography, musical score, visual design, and emotional storytelling.
Chief choreographer and Honoured Figure of Kazakhstan Mukaram Avakhri described the premiere as an emotional milestone for the entire company.
«These were very exciting days for our entire team. We were genuinely concerned because the performance required significant dedication from all involved. "Altyn Gul" is a unique production that was created out of a deep love for our culture, history and nature»
A Meaningful Finale to the Season
Artistic Director of the theatre Nurlan Kanetov said the new production perfectly concluded the XIII season.
«The culmination of the XIII theatre season with the premiere of "Altyn Gul" was a significant event for our theatre. This performance reflects our commitment to safeguarding the national cultural heritage by showcasing it through the medium of modern ballet art. The resounding applause from the audience served as a testament to the exceptional efforts of the entire creative team. I would like to express my gratitude to the performers, the production team, the theatre staff and, naturally, our audience for their trust and love of art»
According to Kanetov, the production demonstrates how traditional cultural values can be presented through contemporary performing arts while remaining accessible to modern audiences.
Music Brings the Story to Life
Composer and Honoured Figure of Kazakhstan Renat Gaissin, who created the ballet's score, emphasized the close collaboration between music and choreography.
«This is far from my first work for the Astana Ballet Theatre, but each production is special to me in its own way. It is truly gratifying to observe the manner in which music is brought to life on stage, thanks to the versatility of ballet dancers, their profound emotional impact and their exceptional skill. It is a pleasure to work with Mukaram Avakhri. She is a talented choreographer with excellent artistic taste. She knows how to inspire the entire creative team and bring music to life on stage»
The libretto was written by Honoured Figure of Kazakhstan Bakhyt Kairbekov, while the costume design was created by Aigerim Altybassarova.
Celebrating National Culture Through Contemporary Art
The premiere of Altyn Gul marked not only the finale of the theatre’s XIII season but also demonstrated how Kazakhstan’s cultural heritage can be reimagined for contemporary audiences.
By combining historical inspiration with modern choreography, original music, and striking stage design, the production offers a fresh artistic interpretation of national identity.
The event was held with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Why This Matters
Productions such as Altyn Gul reflect a growing trend in Kazakhstan’s performing arts of combining national history and cultural traditions with contemporary artistic expression.
Inspired by a genuine archaeological artifact and rooted in Kazakh heritage, the ballet showcases how historical narratives can be transformed into modern stage productions capable of engaging both domestic and international audiences.
The successful premiere also reinforces Astana Ballet’s reputation as one of the country’s leading creative institutions and highlights the continuing evolution of Kazakhstan’s national ballet.
