Artificial intelligence is becoming more than a technology race — it is quickly turning into a competition over who gets to shape the rules of the future, DKNews.kz reports.

This week, Kazakhstan secured a seat at one of the world's most influential AI decision-making tables.

Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development Zhaslan Madiyev has joined the founding members of the AI for Good Global Commission, a new high-level international body established by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

Why this matters

The Commission is not another discussion club.

Its mission is to bring together political leaders, technology companies and international organizations to develop practical solutions for trustworthy artificial intelligence, reduce the digital divide and expand access to advanced technologies worldwide.

For Kazakhstan, joining the Commission means having a voice where future global AI policies and priorities are being shaped.

Kazakhstan joins world technology leaders

The AI for Good Global Commission brings together more than 40 influential figures from governments, international organizations and the private sector.

It is co-chaired by Rwanda's President Paul Kagame and Salesforce Founder and CEO Marc Benioff, while ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin serves as Vice-Chair.

Among its members are some of the biggest names in global technology and policymaking, including:

  • Microsoft President Brad Smith
  • NVIDIA Founder and CEO Jensen Huang
  • Amazon CEO Andy Jassy
  • Google Research & Society Senior Vice President James Manyika
  • Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon
  • Accenture Chair and CEO Julie Sweet
  • Anthropic Co-founder Jack Clark
  • Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla
  • WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

The Commission also includes President of Estonia Alar Karis, President of Iceland Halla Tómasdóttir and other global leaders.

First meeting held in Geneva

The Commission held its inaugural meeting on July 8 during the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva.

Participants discussed how countries can cooperate on artificial intelligence, build trustworthy AI systems, narrow the digital divide and make advanced technologies more accessible around the world.

The discussions focused on turning global ambitions into practical initiatives that governments and businesses can implement.

A growing role for Kazakhstan

Madiyev's appointment signals Kazakhstan's growing international profile in artificial intelligence and digital transformation.

Over the past several years, the country has accelerated investments in digital infrastructure, AI development and international partnerships, positioning itself as one of Central Asia's fastest-growing digital economies.

Joining the Commission gives Kazakhstan an opportunity not only to follow global AI trends but also to help shape them.

Looking ahead

As artificial intelligence increasingly influences economic growth, national security and technological competitiveness, international cooperation is becoming more important than ever.

The AI for Good Global Commission is expected to develop practical recommendations that will guide responsible AI development, promote inclusive digital transformation and strengthen cooperation between governments, industry and international organizations.

For Kazakhstan, participation marks another step toward becoming an active contributor to the global AI agenda rather than simply an observer.
