A thematic exhibition dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Kazakhstan's membership in the UN is being held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Delovoy Kazakhstan reports.

The opening ceremony was attended by Mr. Roman Vassilenko, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, Ms. Michaela Friberg-Storey, UN Resident Coordinator for Kazakhstan and Ms. Aliya Mustafina, Director of the Archive of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The exposition contains documents representing the key stages in the formation and development of Kazakhstan’s relations with the universal international organization, including texts of speeches, official letters and photographs.

In his welcoming speech to the guests and participants of the event, Vassilenko noted that the exhibition reflects the history of close interaction and fruitful cooperation between Kazakhstan and UN.

“Kazakhstan has always been and will continue to be a reliable partner for the UN and, in general, the international community, committed to the implementation of a consistent and predictable foreign policy, a supporter of global initiatives aimed at ensuring sustainable peace and security. Our support for the UN is also evidenced by the fact that today Kazakhstan has become home to 27 UN agencies, many of which carry out their work on a regional scale,” he said.

Friberg-Storey thanked for organizing such an exhibition and noted that the successful history of the UN’s work in Kazakhstan is embedded in the history of Kazakhstan’s successful development over the past decades. “Today we could recall the key milestones of Kazakhstan’s glorious history of the membership in the UN through unique archive materials, photos and documents,” she said.

According to her, “Kazakhstan’s membership in the UN has become the source of inspiration for others, just to name a few – initiative to establish the Conference on interaction and confidence-building measures in Asia, non-permanent membership in the Security Council, strong support for multilateralism, mediator role within Astana process, promoting green energy and technologies via Expo 2017 and many more.”

Mustafina noted that in preparing the materials, the concept of the exhibition was based on the principles of historical clarity and reliability, when documents convey the spirit of the times, providing an opportunity to plunge into the atmosphere era.

“Thanks to the active work of Kazakhstan as a full member of the Organization, a rich and diverse historical material has been accumulated, the custodian of which is the Archive of the President,” she emphasized.

In shaping the exposition, copies of valuable documents and photographs from private collections of prominent Kazakh diplomats, including Ms Akmaral Arystanbekova, Tuleutai Suleimenov, and others, were used.

The exhibition has already generated notable interest on the part of the Ministry’s staff and visitors, foreign diplomats and journalists, students doing practical work in the Ministry.

The ceremony participants agreed to continue joint efforts to study and popularize the significant documentary heritage of cooperation between Kazakhstan and the UN.

The exhibition is part of a cycle of commemorative events dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Kazakhstan's membership in the UN, which is planned to be held throughout 2022.
