Doctors performed the first mitral valve clip in Kazakhstan

A unique operation on mitral valve clip procedure was performed for the first time in Kazakhstan by interventional cardiologists of the Heart Center. During the master class, doctors mastered a new method of treating patients with mitral valve insufficiency. This technology allows in a minimally invasive way to insert a catheter containing a clip through the femoral vein, eliminate the valve defect by connecting poorly closing leaflets, and thereby improve blood supply to the whole body, Delovoy Kazakhstan reports.

When the heart is working properly, the mitral valve leaflets open to allow blood to flow into the left ventricle. Further, with the contraction of the left ventricle, the blood enters the aorta and supplies the entire body with oxygen. In case of mitral valve insufficiency, its leaflets do not close tightly, which leads to a backflow of the blood. As a result, the human body does not receive enough oxygen and starts to experience shortness of breath and frequent fatigue.

“This pathology of the heart occurs in 4% of cases. These are mainly patients over 50 years of age, for whom open heart surgery carries a heavy burden and the risk of severe postoperative complications. Therefore, valve clip is a gentle alternative to open surgery” Abdurashid Musayev, head of the catheterization laboratory of the Heart Center

During two days of training, the clinic's doctors, together with colleagues from Turkey, installed a clip for 4 patients. They had mitral valve insufficiency and contraindications to open heart surgery, as well as other concomitant diseases.

“I used to be in a serious condition after a heart attack and experienced frequent shortness of breath. Now my health has improved after the operation, I am very grateful to the doctors of the Center for carrying out this operation” Says the patient of the clinic
“Recovery after this operation proceeds faster, our patients are already preparing for discharge from the clinic. It cannot be said that this method can be used to treat all patients. However, this technology can significantly improve the quality of life of people for whom the only treatment now is a drug therapy” Marat Aripov, Director of the CAD of Interventional Cardiology and Radiology of the Heart Center
