The national standard of the Republic of Kazakhstan OIC/SMIIC 24-2022 "General requirements for food additives and other chemicals added to Halal food products" has been approved, DKNews.kz reports.

The standard sets out the requirements and conditions necessary for food additives and any other chemicals in the production of food products. This will ensure that the final products are Halal and safe for consumption worldwide» KazStandart

Currently, some companies specialize in the production of pure food chemicals and additives. Others specialize in the production of food ingredients of plant and animal origin. Others create unique complex mixtures of ingredients called proprietary blends or secret formulas, such as flavors. The finished food product purchased by the consumer may contain dozens of different ingredients. Manufacturers of the product usually do not purchase and use all these ingredients separately. They can purchase several mixtures or packages to produce the final product.

There are several types of food additives that are widely used in our country, but are prescribed in the national standard as questionable from the position of Halal.

For example, E120 carmine is used in meat and delicatessen products, is a controversial substance. Carmine, obtained from insects, has been a food additive of animal origin since its production. It is forbidden to be eaten by Muslims and is a non-Halal supplement.

E441 gelatin extracted from fish and plants, as well as from the bones, skin and veins of permitted animals slaughtered in accordance with Sharia is considered Halal and allowed to be consumed, and gelatin obtained from unauthorized animals (pig, dog, donkey and others) are considered forbidden.

E325 sodium lactate is used in food products because of its antimicrobial action, is a dangerous food additive for young children with lactose intolerance, which is initially obtained from milk, but is considered suspicious because it may contain pork rennet.

It should be noted that the national standard comes into effect on July 1, 2023.
