Kazakhstan and Latvia unite against nuclear weapons

A Photo Exhibition Dedicated to the International Day Against Nuclear Tests was Opened in Riga, DKnews.kz reports

 The oldest library in Latvia, the Academic Library of the University of Latvia, hosted the opening of a photo exhibition dedicated to the International Day against Nuclear Tests and the 33rd anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site.

Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Latvia Dauren Karipov in his welcoming speech noted that on the initiative of Kazakhstan, at the 64th session of the UN General Assembly, 29 August was declared the International Day against Nuclear Tests. This event became an important milestone on the way to further building a world free of nuclear weapons.

The Kazakh diplomat familiarised the guests with the history of the Semipalatinsk test site, Kazakhstan's anti-nuclear initiatives and its contribution to the disarmament and disarmament of weapons of mass destruction.

The guests of the event were presented historical photos taken during the tests at the test site, archival documents telling about the popular anti-nuclear movement “Nevada – Semipalatinsk”. A short documentary film about the closure of the Semipalatinsk test site was shown.

The opening of the photo exhibition was attended by members of the Saeima, the leadership of diplomatic missions accredited in Latvia, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, scientific, academic, cultural and business circles, as well as the Kazakh diaspora and the media in Latvia.

The photo exhibition organised in the building of the Academic Library of the University of Latvia in Riga will be open until 30 September 2024.
