Discussion on the Role of Civil Society in Combating Domestic Violence in Kazakhstan Held in New York, DKnews.kz reports

An event entitled “Force of Change: The Role of Civil Society in Criminalizing Domestic Violence in Kazakhstan” was held at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The event, which involved representatives of UN agencies, member states, expert groups and the Kazakh diaspora, was organized by civil society activists of Kazakhstan jointly with the Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the UN, UN-Women and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Speaking at the meeting, international gender expert, head of the Adam Damu public foundation Aida Alzhanova, renowned attorney Zhanna Urazbakhova and lawyer, professor at Narikbayev University Muslim Khasenov informed about the work of civil society and experts in Kazakhstan to combat domestic violence in the country.

It was noted that high-profile crimes against women stirred up the public in our country, contributing to its mobilization and successful promotion of legislative initiatives that led to the criminalization of domestic violence.

These successes were driven by the active participation of Kazakh citizens in the political decision-making process, made possible by large-scale democratic reforms and strong support from the President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and the Government.

Participants at the event focused on practical strategies to advance civil initiatives and eradicate violence against women and children. They prioritized strengthening preventive measures and incorporating concepts like stalking and harassment into legislation.

The event also highlighted the importance of collaboration among civil society, academia, government, and parliamentarians to achieve positive legislative changes and promote democratic reforms.

Furthermore, it fostered awareness of civil activism in Kazakhstan, facilitated the exchange of experiences with UN structures and member state delegations, and encouraged productive dialogue on adapting and implementing these practices globally.
