EU and Kazakhstan Strengthen Cooperation under the "Global Gateway" Strategy, DKnews.kz reports.
The European Union (EU) and Kazakhstan have taken a significant step towards strengthening economic and infrastructure ties under the EU’s global initiative, "Global Gateway." During the visit of European Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jozef Sikela, several key agreements were signed to deepen bilateral cooperation. These agreements not only contribute to Kazakhstan’s economic development but also play a crucial role in ensuring Europe’s resource security.
€3 Million Agreement: Strategic Raw Materials for the EU
One of the main achievements of the visit was the signing of a €3 million agreement aimed at developing cooperation between Central Asia and the EU in the field of strategic raw materials. This agreement, implemented through the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), focuses on identifying joint projects and introducing best international practices in the sustainable supply chain of critical raw materials.
Kazakhstan is rich in lithium, rare earth metals, and other strategically important resources. As a result, the EU sees Kazakhstan as a key partner in securing access to these essential materials. Commissioner Sikela emphasized that this cooperation will not only help modernize the European economy but also support the development of Kazakhstan’s industrial sector, create new jobs, and foster innovation in the extraction and processing of mineral resources.
€200 Million Investment in Transport Infrastructure and Green Energy
During the visit, a framework loan agreement worth €200 million was signed between the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Development Bank of Kazakhstan (DBK). The EU will provide an €18 million guarantee for this financing, which will be used to modernize transport infrastructure and develop renewable energy sources.
A key focus of the agreement is the development of the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor, which connects Kazakhstan with Europe, reducing dependence on traditional logistics routes and improving trade connectivity between Central Asia and the EU. Additionally, the funding is part of the "Team Europe" initiative, which aims to improve water resource management, enhance energy infrastructure, and combat climate change.
Kazakhstan – A Strategic Partner for the EU
During his speech, Commissioner Sikela highlighted that the European Union is committed to strengthening its long-term economic partnership with Kazakhstan. As the largest economy in Central Asia, Kazakhstan plays a vital role in enhancing economic connectivity between Europe and the region.
The "Global Gateway" strategy aims to mobilize €300 billion in public and private investments worldwide by 2027. This initiative focuses on the development of digital, energy, and transport infrastructure, as well as supporting education and scientific research. By participating in these large-scale projects, Kazakhstan not only attracts significant financial resources but also integrates into global supply chains and technological innovations.
Future Prospects for Cooperation
The agreements reached during the visit open up new opportunities for EU-Kazakhstan cooperation. Strengthening partnerships in the extraction of critical raw materials, infrastructure development, and green energy will create a solid foundation for sustainable economic growth.
In the future, this cooperation could expand into other strategic areas, including the digital economy, scientific research, and high-tech industries. The EU and Kazakhstan continue to build a new model of partnership based on mutual benefit, sustainable development, and strategic security.
