Creative industries and innovation were the key topics of discussion among Kazakhstani and Italian scholars at the unique conference “Science and Creativity”, DKnews.kz reports.
The event was organized by the Italian Embassy in Astana and the Italian Institute of Culture in Almaty in cooperation with Nazarbayev University.
The conference showcased current research projects being implemented in collaboration with universities and research institutes across Italy.
Delivering the opening remarks, Minister of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan, Sayasat Nurbek, noted that Kazakhstan is entering a new chapter in the development of science and research—one defined by rethinking objectives, openness, and collaboration.
“Guided by the national concept for the development of science within the higher education system, we are transitioning to an open model that directly links science to the needs of the economy and society. Today, science must not only explore but also solve problems, implement innovations, and inspire. Events like this remind us that science is not only about data and discoveries, but also about innovation, culture, connections, and partnership. Italy’s long-standing tradition of scientific excellence—from Leonardo da Vinci to Enrico Fermi—continues to inspire the world. And here in Kazakhstan, we are committed to building bridges between our scientific communities and addressing common challenges together” Sayasat Nurbek
In turn, the Ambassador of Italy to Kazakhstan, Antonello De Riu, highlighted Kazakhstan as a dynamic country with a strong sense of identity and a strategic partner in bridging past and future. According to him, cooperation with institutions such as NU—where many Italian scholars are currently working—demonstrates that science is becoming a driver of cultural diplomacy and economic growth.
“At the heart of today’s gathering is a deep conviction: the synergy between the humanities and the natural sciences is not merely an ideal, but a concrete necessity for reinterpreting cultural heritage. Without a humanistic foundation, science loses its capacity for effective communication. This interdisciplinary dialogue is what transforms culture into a lever for innovation, development, and global engagement” Ambassador De Riu stated
The conference featured research presentations by Italian professors from various NU schools, including the Graduate School of Public Policy, the School of Engineering and Digital Sciences, the School of Sciences and Humanities, and the School of Medicine. Special guests included Patrizia Asproni, President of the Fondazione Industria e Cultura; Stefano Minini, CEO of Federated Innovation @MIND; and other distinguished speakers.
In conclusion, NU President Professor Waqar Ahmad remarked:
“This remarkable conference dedicated to science and creativity highlights the growing importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. Italy has long been a leader in the creative industries, and we are honored to maintain strong and fruitful ties with the Italian community and the Embassy of Italy in Kazakhstan. Nazarbayev University is proud to serve as a platform for such a promising initiative and looks forward to expanding academic exchange and joint projects with leading Italian universities and educational institutions“
