The UMC Heart Center continues the program for the development of cardiac surgery services in Kazakhstan, DKnews.kz reports.

On May 28, 2025, with the support of specialists from the UMC Heart Center, the opening of the cardiac surgery department took place within the walls of the Multidisciplinary City Hospital No. 1 in Astana. This event is a significant step forward in the development of emergency and planned cardiac surgery in the region.

The first two operations were performed on the opening day of the department — coronary artery bypass grafting with artificial circulation and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) on a working heart with specialists from the UMC Heart Center. A large, well-coordinated team included cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensive care physicians, operating nurses, perfusiologists. This is not just a team, it is a union of professionals united for the main goal — to save lives.

“The Heart Center supports the new department from the very first steps, providing not only practical assistance, but also methodological, organizational and training support. Training modules for doctors and nursing specialists have already been conducted at UMC, and we will continue to share our experience, helping to form an independent, sustainable cardiac surgery service at city Hospital No. 1,” said Yermagambet Kuatbayev, Director of Surgery at UMC.

Given the high need for timely care for patients with acute coronary syndrome, the new department will allow to perform a wide range of open-heart surgeries, including both emergency interventions and elective surgeries. Multidisciplinary City Hospital No. 1 has already become a participant in the emergency care program for acute coronary pathology with the participation of medical specialists from the UMC Heart Center. The opening of the cardiac surgery department was a logical and important continuation of this initiative.

In the near future, regular CABG operations and correction of acquired heart valve defects are planned at MCH No. 1. Also, thanks to the training, they will be able to provide assistance to patients with aortic dissections and other life-threatening conditions. This is just the beginning of a long journey. Through the joint efforts of specialists, it is possible to significantly improve the accessibility and quality of cardiac surgery for residents of the city and the region.
