The Embassy of Kazakhstan in France hosted a remarkable lecture by Professor Galiya Kambarbekova, a leading Kazakh orientalist from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. The topic of the event was the rich history and culture of Central Asia, as reflected in rare Persian and Chagatai manuscripts dating from the 13th to 19th centuries, currently preserved at the National Library of France, DKnews.kz reports.

Galiya Kambarbekova holds a PhD in Philology and is a professor in the Department of the Middle East and South Asia at the Faculty of Oriental Studies. She is currently on an academic internship at the National Library of France as part of Kazakhstan’s Bolashak international scholarship program and the 500 Scholars initiative.

Ancient voices through centuries-old pages

Professor Kambarbekova’s presentation served as a unique window into the past. She showcased the results of her deep analysis of rare Persian and Chagatai manuscripts that provide invaluable insights into the history, culture, religion and everyday life of the peoples of Central Asia — from the Fergana Valley and Tashkent to Bukhara and the Semirechye region.

Special emphasis was placed on how these manuscripts reflect intercultural dialogue, mutual influences, and the deep-rooted identity of Kazakh culture through language, imagery and storytelling.

France's academic legacy in Asian studies

The lecture also explored the contributions of French Orientalists to the study of Central Asia. Professor Kambarbekova compared research approaches in Kazakhstan and France, highlighting the importance of international collaboration in preserving cultural heritage.

Kazakh science stepping onto the global stage

This lecture in Paris was more than just an academic talk — it was a milestone in Kazakhstan's growing presence in the global scientific and diplomatic community. Through the Bolashak and 500 Scholars programs, Kazakh researchers now have access to the world's premier libraries and archives, building intellectual bridges across continents.

The National Library of France — a true treasure of the East

Home to one of the most extensive collections of Eastern manuscripts in Europe, the National Library of France safeguards thousands of works — many still awaiting in-depth research. Galiya Kambarbekova's ongoing work helps unlock hidden chapters of Central Asia’s heritage and brings Kazakh academia into the heart of global historical studies.
