In 2024, the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) made a historic decision: the Kazakh tazy was officially recognized as a separate dog breed, and Kazakhstan received the status of the breed’s country of origin, DKNews.kz reports.
This is more than paperwork. It is global recognition of heritage, culture and history.
A symbol of the steppe
For centuries, the tazy lived side by side with people of the steppe. Fast, enduring and loyal, it was valued not only as a hunting companion, but as part of family life.

The tazy was considered a treasure. It was passed down, protected and treated with respect.
Now the breed has:
- an official standard
- confirmed country of origin
- international prospects
Saved just in time
There was a moment when the tazy could have disappeared. Cross-breeding was spreading and purebred dogs became rare.

Everything changed in 2022, when President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev instructed the government to preserve national dog breeds and promote them internationally.
Specialists studied the breed, documented it and worked with FCI. Today we see the result.
Now FCI will:
- oversee the structured development of the breed
- help preserve genetic purity
- support breeding programs
- open access to international shows
What it means for Kazakhstan
This decision brings opportunities:
- a stronger national cultural brand
- development of research and breeding centers
- international exhibitions and competitions
- growing public interest in cultural heritage
And most importantly, the tazy is protected.
A story that continues
Once, many feared that the tazy would only remain in legends and books. Today, it has a future.
Kazakhstan has:
- preserved its breed
- protected it
- brought it back to the world stage
This is not the end of tradition. It is the start of a new chapter.
