Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan are strengthening their strategic partnership, with growing cooperation that extends beyond bilateral ties to regional and international dimensions. Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Azerbaijan Alim Bayel met with Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan for Foreign Policy, to review the results of cooperation over the past year and discuss plans for the period ahead, DKNews.kz reports.
The meeting highlighted the increasingly dynamic nature of Kazakhstan–Azerbaijan relations and their expanding role in shaping regional processes.
High-level diplomacy as a measure of trust
Ambassador Bayel emphasized the high frequency of mutual visits as a key indicator of the depth and intensity of bilateral cooperation. Over the past three years, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has visited Azerbaijan six times, while President Ilham Aliyev has made five visits to Kazakhstan.
Such an active exchange at the highest level reflects strong personal trust between the two leaders and underscores the strategic character of the partnership.
A historic step toward peace in the South Caucasus
Special attention during the talks was given to developments on 8 August 2025, when a long-standing conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia was brought to an end with the signing of a historic Declaration on Peaceful Settlement. The agreement marked a turning point for stability in the South Caucasus.
Kazakhstan’s contribution to the peace process was also noted. In 2024, Kazakhstan provided a platform for Azerbaijani–Armenian negotiations, supporting dialogue at a critical stage. Both sides highlighted the symbolic and practical importance of the fact that the first cargo to enter Armenia through Azerbaijani territory in 30 years was Kazakh wheat, a move seen as a sign of renewed connectivity and trust.
The importance of further unblocking transport and economic communications was underlined as a key factor for sustainable regional development.
Azerbaijan and Central Asia: an expanding format
One of the notable developments of 2025 was Azerbaijan’s full inclusion in the Central Asia leaders’ summit format. Kazakhstan played an active role in supporting this process.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, commenting to Azerbaijani media, said he would welcome Azerbaijan’s participation in the broader C5 + United States format, highlighting Baku’s growing role in regional and international dialogue.
Economy, logistics and energy in focus
The sides stressed the need to strengthen economic and industrial cooperation, including through the use of a joint investment fund. Particular emphasis was placed on further developing transport and logistics links, as well as energy cooperation, which are seen as key drivers of long-term growth and resilience.
Shaping a new Eurasian architecture
In discussing international and regional issues, the interlocutors noted that Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan are actively working together to help shape a new geopolitical and geoeconomic architecture across the Eurasian space.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation and advancing shared initiatives that reflect the evolving strategic partnership between Astana and Baku.
