Kazakhstan has taken another step toward strengthening its presence in Latin America. A ceremonial opening of the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Mexico City was held at the Embassy of Kazakhstan in the United Mexican States, marking a new milestone in Kazakh-Mexican relations, DKNews.kz reports.

The event brought together diplomats, lawmakers, business leaders, and representatives of government institutions from both countries. Among the guests were the Honorary Consul of Kazakhstan in Mexico City Carlos Barrera, Director General for Africa, Central Asia, and the Middle East at Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Anibal Gomez Toledo, Deputy of the Chamber of Deputies of the General Congress of Mexico and Chair of the Kazakhstan-Mexico Parliamentary Friendship Group Maribel Martinez Ruiz, as well as representatives of Mexico’s Ministry of Economy, the Miguel Hidalgo borough administration, CANACINTRA business circles, and the media.

Kazakhstan’s reforms and growing international engagement

Opening the ceremony, Yerlan Kubashev, Counselor of the Embassy of Kazakhstan, spoke about the country’s modern socio-economic development and the large-scale systemic reforms currently underway. He emphasized Kazakhstan’s openness to international cooperation and its interest in expanding ties with Mexico.

The Kazakh diplomat also expressed gratitude to Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for supporting and approving the candidacy of Carlos Barrera, highlighting his active role in promoting bilateral relations and his close cooperation with the Embassy.

A new chapter in Kazakhstan–Mexico relations

Participants noted that the opening of the Honorary Consulate represents an important stage in the development of Kazakh-Mexican relations. The institution of honorary consulates has proven its effectiveness worldwide as a practical tool for expanding international cooperation, strengthening trade and economic ties, and protecting the rights and legitimate interests of citizens and businesses.

Speaking at the ceremony, Anibal Gomez Toledo underlined the steady progress of bilateral relations and congratulated both sides on the 34th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Kazakhstan and Mexico. He described Kazakhstan as a reliable and important partner for Mexico in Central Asia and pointed to the growing number of Kazakh tourists visiting Mexico as a sign of increasing mutual trust and expanding people-to-people contacts.

New opportunities for trade and investment

In his remarks, newly appointed Honorary Consul Carlos Barrera thanked the Kazakh side, as well as the Government and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, for the trust placed in him. He expressed readiness to actively promote bilateral cooperation in various fields, with a particular focus on trade, economic, and investment ties, and to facilitate direct business contacts between entrepreneurs from both countries.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, Carlos Barrera was formally presented with his Honorary Consul’s credential, issued by Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Second honorary consulate in Mexico

Carlos Barrera is a Mexican entrepreneur and serves as Vice President of the National Chamber of the Transformation Industry of Mexico (CANACINTRA) for the industrial sector.

The Honorary Consulate in Mexico City became Kazakhstan’s second honorary consular mission in Mexico. The first was opened in Guadalajara in 2018, covering the states of Jalisco and Nayarit.

The opening of the consulate in Mexico’s capital is expected to give new momentum to political dialogue, business cooperation, tourism, and humanitarian exchanges between Kazakhstan and Mexico.
