In Astana, Chairman of the Management Board of KazMunayGas JSC, Askhat Khasenov, held a meeting with Chairman of the Board of Directors of CITIC Construction Co., Ltd., Yang Jianqiang. The talks focused on the progress of the Karachaganak Gas Processing Plant (GPP), one of Kazakhstan’s key strategic projects in the gas sector, DKNews.kz reports.
The project is expected to play an important role in strengthening gas processing capacity and ensuring stable supplies to the domestic market.
Moving toward the FEED stage
During the meeting, the parties reviewed the implementation of the cooperation agreement signed at the end of 2025. The document outlines the preliminary cost assessment, equipment configuration, and the framework for cooperation on the project.
The sides agreed on the next steps required to move to the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) stage. This phase is crucial for developing optimal technical and organizational solutions that will form the basis for construction.

Active preparation underway
Specialists from KazMunayGas and CITIC Construction are currently working intensively on the early stages of the project. Askhat Khasenov emphasized the importance of meeting the planned timelines, noting that timely preparation of key project conditions is essential for the successful implementation of the gas processing plant.
According to participants, decisions made at this stage will largely determine the overall construction schedule.

Potential expansion of cooperation
The meeting also addressed the possibility of CITIC Construction’s participation in other gas projects in Kazakhstan. This may open the door to broader cooperation beyond the Karachaganak project and further strengthen the partnership between the two companies.
“KazMunayGas attaches special importance to strengthening mutually beneficial ties with Chinese companies. Considering that the CITIC Group is a long-standing strategic partner of KMG with extensive experience in implementing large-scale projects, we intend to expand long-term cooperation across all key areas,” Khasenov said.
Why the project matters
The Karachaganak Gas Processing Plant is expected to contribute significantly to the development of Kazakhstan’s gas industry by increasing domestic processing capacity and enhancing energy security. The involvement of an experienced international partner improves the prospects for the project’s timely and efficient implementation.
Experts note that the meeting signals a transition from strategic planning to practical execution of one of the country’s most important gas infrastructure projects.
