A meeting was held in Astana between Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy Yerlan Akkenzhenov and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom to Kazakhstan, Sally Axworthy. The talks focused on strengthening strategic cooperation in the energy sector, with an emphasis on environmental sustainability and the adoption of advanced technologies, DKNews.kz reports.

From traditional extraction to new solutions
During the discussion, it was noted that British companies Shell and BP make a significant contribution to the development of Kazakhstan’s energy sector. The Minister emphasized the Ministry’s interest in expanding cooperation and moving away from traditional extraction models toward innovative technological solutions.
The parties focused in particular on projects in hydrogen energy, the deployment of smart grids, and improving the energy efficiency of industrial facilities.

“Kazakhstan is ready to expand the horizons of its partnership with London. Our interests cover the entire value chain — from resource extraction to the development of renewable energy sources and enhanced energy efficiency. Today’s meeting lays the groundwork for deep technological exchange between our countries,” Yerlan Akkenzhenov said.
Climate agenda and emissions reduction
Special attention was given to climate policy issues and the implementation of the Global Methane Pledge. Kazakhstan is carrying out systematic work to reduce methane emissions in the oil and gas and coal sectors, drawing on international expertise and investment to modernize equipment and infrastructure.
It was emphasized that reducing carbon and methane footprints is becoming an integral part of the country’s long-term energy strategy.

Power sector development plans
The Minister also briefed the British side on plans to develop Kazakhstan’s power sector. By 2030, the share of renewable energy sources in the national energy mix is expected to reach 15 percent.
Alongside the expansion of green generation, Kazakhstan is introducing “clean coal” principles aimed at significantly reducing harmful emissions while maintaining the stable operation of the coal industry and ensuring energy security.

Dialogue as the foundation of partnership
In conclusion, Yerlan Akkenzhenov reaffirmed his readiness for regular exchanges of views and close coordination with the British side. According to him, sustained dialogue will enable more effective implementation of joint projects and contribute to strengthening the energy security of both countries.
