Kazakhstan has been awarded the right to host the 10th Winter Asian Games in 2029, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports has announced. For the country, this marks a return to hosting the largest winter multi-sport event in Asia after an 18-year hiatus, DKNews.kz reports.
It is noted that organizing an event of this scale will provide an opportunity to showcase Kazakhstan’s sporting potential and its readiness to host competitions of the highest international standard.
Experience proven over time
Kazakhstan previously hosted the Winter Asian Games in 2011. At that time, the competitions were held in Astana and Almaty and received high praise from the international sporting community.
As part of the preparations for those Games, modern, world-class sports facilities were built in both cities. Today, these venues continue to be actively used for training national teams, hosting international tournaments, and organizing mass sporting events.
Major tournaments as part of the sporting legacy
Kazakhstan has extensive experience in hosting large-scale multi-sport competitions. In 2017, the country successfully hosted the Winter Universiade, which was conducted at a high organizational level.
In addition, international competitions in winter sports are held in Kazakhstan on a regular basis, confirming the sustained readiness of its infrastructure and specialists to welcome athletes from different countries.
Games without large-scale construction
The 2029 Winter Asian Games are expected to be held using existing sports infrastructure. This means that organizing the Games will not require the construction of major new facilities.
The available sports complexes are sufficient to host competitions in all disciplines included in the Winter Asian Games program, making the preparation process more rational and economically balanced.
Development of winter sports
Currently, 13 Olympic winter sports are actively developing in Kazakhstan. Hosting the Winter Asian Games is seen as an additional incentive to further develop sports infrastructure, enhance athlete training standards, and promote winter sports among the population.
The 2029 Games are expected to become not only a major sporting event, but also an important milestone in the development of both mass participation and elite sports in the country.
