Kazakhstan and Greece are taking steps to deepen their cooperation, signaling a renewed interest in strengthening ties between Central Asia and the Mediterranean.

The discussion took place during a meeting between Kazakhstan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arman Issetov and Greece’s Ambassador to Kazakhstan Antonia Katzourou, where both sides reviewed the current state of bilateral relations and explored opportunities for future collaboration, DKNews.kz reports.

The meeting highlighted the growing political dialogue between Astana and Athens. Officials from both countries noted that cooperation has been steadily developing not only at the diplomatic level but also in trade, economic relations, and cultural exchange.

According to Deputy Minister Issetov, Greece plays an important role for Kazakhstan in the Mediterranean region — both as a partner within Europe and as a gateway to broader regional cooperation.

“Greece is an important partner of Kazakhstan in the Mediterranean. We are ready to expand the legal and treaty framework and deepen cooperation both bilaterally and within international organizations,” Issetov said during the talks.

A Bridge Between Central Asia and the Mediterranean

The partnership between Kazakhstan and Greece has gradually evolved over the past decades, supported by diplomatic dialogue, business cooperation and cultural ties. While the two countries are geographically distant, they share several common interests — including tourism development, trade opportunities and cooperation within international institutions.

For Kazakhstan, strengthening ties with European partners remains a strategic priority as the country continues to position itself as a key economic and logistical hub between Asia and Europe. Greece, on the other hand, offers access to Mediterranean markets and a long-established tourism industry that attracts millions of visitors each year.

Tourism as a Promising Direction

One of the most promising areas of cooperation discussed during the meeting was tourism. Ambassador Katzourou emphasized that Athens sees significant potential in expanding tourism ties with Kazakhstan.

In recent years, interest among Kazakh travelers in Mediterranean destinations has been growing rapidly, with Greece becoming one of the popular options thanks to its rich history, islands, beaches and cultural heritage.

Developing tourism cooperation could include easier travel arrangements, joint cultural initiatives and promotion of destinations in both countries.

Expanding the Legal Framework

Another important point of discussion was the expansion of the legal and treaty base between the two nations. Strengthening agreements can help facilitate investment, trade, and cooperation in various sectors — from education and culture to transport and business partnerships.

Such steps are particularly important as Kazakhstan continues to attract foreign investment and diversify its economic partnerships beyond traditional markets.

Continuing Political Dialogue

At the end of the meeting, both sides agreed to maintain regular political dialogue and continue working on expanding the Kazakh-Greek partnership across multiple sectors.

For Kazakhstan, strengthening ties with Mediterranean and European partners remains part of a broader foreign policy strategy focused on multi-vector diplomacy — building balanced relations with countries across different regions of the world.

The meeting between Issetov and Katzourou reflects this approach, demonstrating that even geographically distant countries can find new areas of cooperation when interests align.

As diplomatic engagement continues, experts say the next stage of Kazakhstan-Greece relations could bring new projects in tourism, business and cultural exchange — further connecting Central Asia with the Mediterranean region.
