Kazakhstan and Spain are taking steps to strengthen their economic partnership as both countries explore new opportunities in trade, logistics, and industry, DKNews.kz reports.

During a meeting in Madrid, Kazakhstan’s Ambassador to Spain Danat Mussayev held talks with Amparo López, Spain’s Secretary of State for Trade and Co-Chair of the Kazakhstan–Spain Intergovernmental Commission. The discussion focused on the current state of bilateral cooperation and the prospects for expanding economic ties between the two countries.

Growing economic dialogue

The two sides reviewed the results of trade and economic cooperation over the past year, highlighting what they described as positive momentum in bilateral engagement.

Particular attention was given to the outcomes of the 11th session of the Kazakhstan–Spain Intergovernmental Commission and the 8th meeting of the Kazakhstan–Spain Business Council, which were held in Madrid in March 2025. According to the participants, these platforms have become key mechanisms for connecting businesses and government institutions from both countries.

Officials noted that the dialogue between Astana and Madrid has become increasingly practical, with more focus on concrete projects and sector-specific cooperation.

New sectors for cooperation

During the talks, the parties discussed opportunities to expand collaboration in several strategic sectors.

Among the areas highlighted were:

  • Energy, including potential cooperation in both traditional and renewable energy projects
  • Construction materials industry, where Kazakhstan sees growing export potential
  • Light industry, particularly textiles and manufacturing
  • Agriculture, an area where Kazakhstan hopes to increase exports to European markets

Both sides also discussed the possibility of expanding the range of Kazakh products exported to Spain, which could include agricultural goods, processed food products, and industrial materials.

For Kazakhstan, Spain represents not only a promising market but also a gateway to the wider European Union.

Alternative trade routes gaining importance

Logistics and transport connectivity were another key topic of discussion.

The participants emphasized the growing role of alternative trade corridors, particularly the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, often referred to as the Middle Corridor. This route connects Asia and Europe through Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea, the South Caucasus, and onward to European markets.

In recent years, the corridor has gained increased attention as countries look for diversified supply chains and more resilient transport routes between Asia and Europe.

Officials noted that expanding the use of such logistics corridors could help facilitate trade flows and reduce delivery times for goods moving between Kazakhstan and Southern Europe.

Political reforms also discussed

In addition to economic issues, the meeting touched on Kazakhstan’s domestic political developments.

Ambassador Mussayev briefed the Spanish side on the upcoming referendum on the draft new Constitution of Kazakhstan. According to the ambassador, the proposed reforms are aimed at strengthening institutional foundations, modernizing the country’s political and economic system, and improving the effectiveness and stability of public administration.

Amparo López welcomed the information and gave a positive assessment of the reform initiatives. She noted that such steps could contribute to strengthening Kazakhstan’s investment climate and increasing its attractiveness for international investors.

Looking ahead

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides confirmed their intention to continue active cooperation across the entire spectrum of bilateral relations.

With growing economic dialogue, expanding logistics connectivity, and ongoing reforms inside Kazakhstan, officials say the partnership between Astana and Madrid could gain new momentum in the coming years.

For Kazakhstan, strengthening ties with European economies like Spain is seen as an important part of its broader strategy to diversify trade, attract investment, and integrate more deeply into global markets.
