Kazakhstan has presented its rich intangible cultural heritage and the Nauryznama framework at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, highlighting national traditions on the global stage, DKNews.kz reports.

The event brought together diplomats, international experts, and representatives of the Kazakh diaspora, becoming part of the broader ten-day Nauryznama celebration.

Cultural diplomacy at UNESCO

The presentation was organized by the Permanent Delegation of Kazakhstan to UNESCO with the support of the Abai Cultural Centre under the Embassy of Kazakhstan in France.

Held on March 18, 2026, the event gathered:

  • heads of diplomatic missions of UNESCO Member States
  • UNESCO Secretariat staff
  • friends of Kazakhstan
  • representatives of the Kazakh diaspora

Opening the event, Ambassador Askar Abdrakhmanov подчеркнул значение Наурыза как одного из древнейших праздников мира.

“Nauryz is one of the oldest holidays in the world, symbolizing the renewal of nature, harmony, and unity among peoples,” he said.

He also noted that this year the spirit of renewal in Kazakhstan coincides with large-scale reforms and the adoption of a new Constitution through a nationwide referendum held on March 15.

What Nauryznama represents

The Ambassador introduced the concept of the Nauryznama decade, emphasizing that it reflects the core values of Kazakh society.

  • tolerance and friendship
  • respect for nature
  • care for others
  • preservation of traditions

Guests were presented with a thematic brochure and video materials illustrating these ideas.

The presentation also highlighted the importance of international cooperation in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. In particular, the celebration of Nauryz was jointly nominated by 13 countries and inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List, reflecting shared traditions across a vast region.

UNESCO highlights Kazakhstan’s contribution

Secretary of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Fumiko Ohinata praised Kazakhstan’s active role within UNESCO.

She emphasized that elements such as the dombra, traditional yurt craftsmanship, and national games are among the most recognizable symbols of Kazakhstan worldwide.

Ohinata also reaffirmed UNESCO’s readiness to continue cooperation with Kazakhstan in promoting and safeguarding its cultural heritage.

As a gesture of friendship and appreciation, Ambassador Abdrakhmanov presented her with a traditional Kazakh robe — shapan — on the occasion of National Clothing Day.

Living traditions on display

The evening program offered guests an immersive experience of Kazakhstan’s cultural diversity.

France-based Kazakh artist Zhanel Zhubanova demonstrated the ancient art of felt-making, showcasing both the process and her works that reflect the deep connection between people and nature.

It was also noted that a multinational nomination of Traditional Felt Making — jointly submitted by eight countries — will be considered for UNESCO inscription in December 2026.

Music, games and national identity

The cultural program included performances and interactive elements representing Kazakhstan’s intangible heritage.

  • Niyaz Torebek performed Kurmangazy’s kuy “Adai” on the dombra
  • Gauhar Rustemkyzy presented the song “Qarlygash”
  • Chingis Kuanbayev introduced guests to the intellectual game Togyzkumalak

Special attention was given to traditional clothing, with a presentation of men’s and women’s national costumes, highlighting ornaments, materials, and symbolic meanings.

Taste of Kazakhstan

The evening concluded with a tasting of traditional Kazakh cuisine, allowing guests to experience the country’s culinary heritage.

  • qazaqsha et (beshbarmak)
  • nauryz kozhe
  • traditional dairy products
  • national sweets

Why this matters

The presentation at UNESCO demonstrates Kazakhstan’s growing role in global cultural diplomacy.

By promoting its intangible heritage, the country not only preserves its traditions but also strengthens intercultural dialogue and international cooperation.

Such initiatives position Kazakhstan as an active participant in global cultural processes and highlight its contribution to the diversity of world heritage.
