Kazakhstan is making a bold move that could reshape its entire education system. This is not just another digital reform — it is one of the largest AI-driven education initiatives in the world, DKNews.kz reports.

As part of a nationwide program, 165,000 educators will gain access to ChatGPT Edu — a version of ChatGPT specifically designed for education. And the scale of this rollout signals something bigger: a shift in how teaching itself is done.

A project of global scale

The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with OpenAI, with Freedom Holding Corp. as the sponsor and Bilim Group serving as the technology integration partner.

Under its agreement with OpenAI, Freedom Holding Corp. has secured 165,000 annual ChatGPT Edu licenses for educators across Kazakhstan. This places the country among global leaders in applying AI within education systems.

This is not a pilot project. It is a nationwide rollout.

Why this matters now

Teachers today face growing pressure — from lesson planning and grading to reporting and adapting materials for different student levels.

AI is stepping in not as a replacement, but as a powerful assistant.

With ChatGPT Edu, educators can:

  • create lesson plans in minutes
  • design assignments and tests
  • adapt materials to different learning levels
  • automate routine administrative work

And most importantly — reclaim time.

Time that can be spent where it matters most: with students.

“ChatGPT Edu is more than just a technological tool – it is an investment in the human capital of Kazakhstan. The primary goal of the initiative is to help educators adopt AI and integrate it into their work, reducing workload while improving teaching quality and supporting professional development. We are providing educators with a tool that frees up their time for what matters most – children,” noted Alexandr Savchenko, CEO of Bilim Group.

Who will benefit

The rollout covers the entire education system:

  • preschools
  • schools
  • colleges
  • universities
  • research institutes
  • Astana Hub participants

Access will be free for all participants, with activation handled through the national platform BilimClass at ai.bilimclass.kz.

Backed by the government

The project is being implemented with the involvement of multiple government bodies:

  • Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development
  • Ministry of Education
  • Ministry of Science and Higher Education

This level of coordination shows that AI in education is not just a trend — it is becoming a national priority.

What OpenAI says

The initiative is also drawing international attention.

“Education plays a central role in ensuring advanced AI expands opportunity for everyone. Kazakhstan’s collaboration with OpenAI shows how governments can help close AI capability gaps by giving educators access to useful tools, practical support and training that helps deliver lasting impact across the education system,” said Kevin Mills of OpenAI.

A shift in how education works

What makes this project different is not just the technology — it is the change in mindset.

AI is not replacing teachers. It is redefining their role.

  • from information providers to mentors
  • from routine work to meaningful interaction
  • from standardized teaching to personalized learning

And that shift could have long-term effects on how students learn and grow.

A new chapter for Kazakhstan

This initiative signals a clear direction: Kazakhstan is investing in technology, education, and people at the same time.

If successful, the country could become a model for how AI can be integrated into education at scale — not as an experiment, but as a foundation for the future.

And for teachers, it means something simple but powerful: less routine, more purpose.
