Kazakhstan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yermek Kosherbayev, took part in the mourning ceremonies held in Tehran for the farewell to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, DKNews.kz reports.

During the visit, the Kazakh foreign minister met with President Masoud Pezeshkian and held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, discussing bilateral cooperation, regional developments, and major transport projects.

Kazakhstan Expresses Condolences

On behalf of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and the people of Kazakhstan, Kosherbayev conveyed condolences to Iran following the recent tragic events.

He also wished a speedy recovery to those who were injured.

Focus on Bilateral Cooperation

During the meeting with President Pezeshkian, the two sides reviewed progress in implementing agreements reached during the Iranian President's official visit to Kazakhstan in December 2025.

They also exchanged views on the regional situation and its future development.

Talks with Foreign Minister Araghchi covered a broad range of issues, including:

  • Bilateral political cooperation
  • Trade and economic relations
  • Regional and international organizations
  • Future development of Kazakhstan-Iran ties

Kosherbayev reaffirmed Kazakhstan's commitment to strengthening its long-standing relationship with Iran based on friendship, good-neighborliness, and mutually beneficial cooperation.

Transport Project Moves Forward

Particular attention was given to the agreement signed on June 28, 2026, allocating land at Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas for the construction of a Kazakh transport and logistics terminal.

The project is being implemented under the instructions of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to strengthen Kazakhstan's transport and transit potential and expand export opportunities.

Officials expressed confidence that the new logistics hub would further boost bilateral trade.

Trade Continues to Grow

According to the discussions, trade between Kazakhstan and Iran increased by 26.4% in 2025, reaching $430.2 million.

The new terminal at Shahid Rajaee Port is expected to facilitate cargo transportation and further expand commercial cooperation between the two countries.

Regional Stability on the Agenda

Kosherbayev also highlighted the importance of the understandings reached under the Memorandum of Understanding between Iran and the United States, noting their significance for regional stability.

The parties emphasized the important role played by Iran and other regional countries in maintaining peace and security.

Why This Matters

The visit underscores Kazakhstan's continued engagement with Iran while advancing strategic transport and logistics projects that support the country's role as a regional transit hub.

The planned logistics terminal at Bandar Abbas is expected to strengthen Kazakhstan's access to international markets, while continued political dialogue reflects both countries' interest in expanding economic cooperation and supporting regional stability.
